The main story 📰
A Super Computer is coming - and Microsoft is going to spend $100B to make it happen.
The Information reported that Microsoft and OpenAI are collaborating on Stargate, an AI power super computer that could cost as much as $100B. Microsoft would likely be financing this. This is roughly ~100x more expensive than some of the largest, existing data centers, but $100B might not even be the ceiling! The Information’s piece noted the plan could exceed $115B! This massive datacenter is quite the investment, and comes shortly after it was reported that Amazon is looking to spend $150B on building datacenters over the next 15 years. Stargate is expected to require several gigawatts of power and contain millions of GPUs.
Stargate is penciled to launch in 2028 and will require a significant amount of chips. In what should be no surprise to anyone, Nvidia’s advanced chips would likely be among the beneficiaries of the ~$100B in spend.
